Why Your Website Needs a Redesign: 5 Signs to Look For

Updated: Dec 8, 2025

When it comes to websites, many business owners underestimate their impact. A great website can enhance your company image and help secure more jobs. Conversely, a poorly designed site can drive potential customers away. Before diving into the five signs that indicate your website needs a redesign, remember that a redesign is not just a digital makeover. It's a strategic investment that boosts visibility, credibility, and ultimately, new business opportunities. As you read through these signs, reflect on your own website. Ask yourself: "Does my website exhibit any of these?"

Signs Your Website Needs a Redesign

1. Your Website Has Not Been Updated in 3+ Years

This point might seem obvious, yet it's surprising how often I encounter websites that are outdated or no longer functioning. Just like you wouldn't buy expired items at the grocery store, potential customers won't be eager to book your services if your website feels old or broken.

Here are a few timelines to consider for updating your site:

  • Content updates: Every one to four weeks. This keeps your content and images fresh.

  • Business information/services: Immediately. Update any changes to your services, hours, or contact information on the same day to avoid confusing customers.

  • Design refresh: About every three years. You don’t need to start from scratch, but your site should always be modern, fast, and mobile-friendly.

2. You Rely on Stock Images

Nothing is more disappointing than ordering a product based on a picture, only to find it looks nothing like the image. Regardless of your industry—construction, food service, landscaping, etc.—stock images can erode trust and turn potential customers away. In today's market, people buy with their eyes and value authenticity.

Real pictures of your completed jobs can be a powerful selling tool. For instance, a landscaping company might showcase a retaining wall with a fresh mulch bed on their site. When customers see real examples of your work, they begin to build trust. Don’t let stock images hold your business back, especially when you take pride in your work.

3. Your Competitors' Websites Look Better Than Yours

Competition is a reality in every industry. You don’t want your website to be the reason you fall behind. Beyond word-of-mouth, your digital presence is your strongest salesperson. If a potential customer searches for your service and finds that your competitor's website is more modern, faster, and easier to navigate, they are likely to choose them—even if they found your site first.

A strong website can be the difference between you and your competitor. Ensure you give consumers every reason to choose you.

4. Your Website Does Not Show Up for "Your Service + Town" on Google

Visibility is crucial to your business's success. If you’re not showing up online, you’re losing opportunities. As a business owner, you’ve likely heard of SEO (search engine optimization). Simply put, SEO improves your website's visibility and ranking on search engines.

Strong SEO is especially important at the local level. It helps your business appear when people in your community search for your services. By investing in SEO, you give your business a better chance to outshine competitors.

5. You Avoid Sending People to Your Website

Of all the points on this list, this is the biggest red flag that your website needs a major redesign. As a business owner, you should feel confident in every area of your business, including your digital presence. If you feel embarrassed by your website and avoid directing customers to it, you limit your business's potential for success.

In an age where online presence is everything, your website should be an asset, not a liability.

The Importance of a Website Redesign

Now that we’ve explored five signs that it may be time to redesign your website, take a moment to evaluate your own. If any of these points resonate with you, it’s likely time for an upgrade. If you keep up with your website, you’re probably in good shape. However, these five signs may have highlighted areas for improvement.

At the end of the day, it’s better to fix small leaks before the roof collapses. Addressing problems early prevents them from snowballing into bigger issues later.

Conclusion

If you find yourself nodding along to any of these signs, don’t hesitate to take action. A website redesign can breathe new life into your business. It can enhance your online presence, attract more customers, and ultimately drive growth.
